Management Team


William J. Hackett

Chief Executive Officer

William Hackett is Chief Executive Officer at Matthews International Capital Management, LLC. Prior to joining Matthews in 2007, Bill was a partner with the global investment management practice of Deloitte & Touche LLP. Most recently, he led Deloitte’s U.S. Pacific Southwest investment management practice where he functioned as a lead client service partner for several of Deloitte’s major investment management clients. Prior to this, Bill was based in Tokyo for a three and a half year assignment as Deloitte’s leader for the Asia Pacific investment management practice. In addition to this overseas posting, he spent three years with Deloitte on assignment in Luxembourg focused on Pan-European and offshore investment management clients and markets. He joined Deloitte in New York in 1990. Bill received a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Scranton.


Robert J. Horrocks, PhD

Chief Investment Officer and Portfolio Manager

Robert Horrocks is Chief Investment Officer at Matthews International Capital Management, LLC and a Portfolio Manager. He manages the firm’s Asian Growth and Income strategy and co-manages the Asia Strategic Income strategy. As Chief Investment Officer, Robert oversees the firm’s investment process and investment professionals and sets the research agenda for the investment team. Before joining Matthews in 2008, Robert was Head of Research at Mirae Asset Management in Hong Kong. From 2003 to 2006, Robert served as Chief Investment Officer for Everbright Pramerica in China, establishing its quantitative investment process. He started his career as a Research Analyst with WI Carr Securities in Hong Kong before moving on to spend eight years working in several different Asian jurisdictions for Schroders, including stints as Country General Manager in Taiwan, Deputy Chief Investment Officer in Korea and Designated Chief Investment Officer in Shanghai. Robert earned his PhD in Chinese Economic History from Leeds University in the United Kingdom, and is fluent in Mandarin.


David A. Hartley

Chief Financial Officer

David Hartley is Chief Financial Officer at Matthews International Capital Management, LLC. Prior to joining Matthews in 2011, he served as Chief Accounting Officer at Invesco Ltd., responsible for corporate accounting and financial reporting to the firm’s Senior Managing Directors and Board of Directors, and all public reporting. David had previously been Chief Financial Officer of Invesco's Institutional and Global divisions and served in a variety of roles at Invesco after joining the firm in 1991. He began his career with KPMG in London in 1982 and five years later joined the firm’s Atlanta office, where he worked as a Senior Manager in the international auditing practice. David received a B.S. in Economics and Accounting from the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and is a Chartered Accountant.


Jonathan D. Schuman

Executive Vice President, Head of Global Business Development

Jonathan Schuman joined Matthews International Capital Management, LLC in 2010 as an Executive Vice President. He is responsible for leading the firm’s international business development strategy, developing relationships with key distribution partners and directing the firm’s global sales efforts. Prior to joining the firm, Jonathan was a Managing Director at PineBridge Investments (formerly AIG Investments) in Tokyo, responsible for institutional sales and client relations, product development, marketing and RFP functions for AIG’s third-party investment management business in Japan. He also served as Assistant General Counsel for Legal and Government Affairs for AIG Companies, Japan and Korea. Jonathan earned a J.D. from Harvard Law School, a M.A.L.D from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and a B.A. in Asian Studies from Williams College. He has served as Co-Chair of the Financial Services Committee at the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, and is fluent in Japanese.


Jodi L. Borkowitz, CFA, CFP

Senior Vice President, Client Services

Jodi Borkowitz joined Matthews International Capital Management, LLC in 2006 as a Senior Vice President and leads the firm’s sales and client service efforts. Prior to joining Matthews, Jodi was a Partner and Director of sales & marketing with Advisor Partners, LLC, a boutique separate account manager. From 1992 to 2004, she served as a sales and relationship management executive at JPMorgan Asset Management in New York and San Francisco, and was a key contributor in building the organization's separate account, mutual fund and sub-advisory businesses. Jodi received a B.A. with honors in Mathematics and Economics from Northwestern University.


James E. Campion

Senior Vice President, Head of Asia Business Development

James Campion joined Matthews International Capital Management, LLC in 2010 as a Senior Vice President and leads the firm’s business development efforts in Asia. Most recently, James was Head of Asia Distribution for Threadneedle Portfolio Services in Hong Kong, responsible for setting up its Hong Kong office and developing the firm’s Asia distribution strategy. Prior to this, he served as Allianz Global Investor’s Head of Mutual Funds for the Asia Pacific region and was a Managing Director for New Star International. From 1998 to 2004, James also held several positions with Schroder Investment Management (Hong Kong) Limited, including Regional Head of Mutual Funds, Asia ex Japan.


Jennifer B. Schatz

Senior Vice President, Marketing

Jennifer Schatz joined Matthews International Capital Management, LLC in 2007 as a Senior Vice President responsible for the firm’s marketing activities, brand building efforts and shareholder services. Most recently, she worked with the Ariel Mutual Funds where she served as Vice President of mutual fund marketing. Prior to this, Jennifer was one of the founding principals in the start-up of randmcnally.com, the online business unit of Rand McNally. She also spent over eight years at Accenture and held a variety of marketing and strategic planning roles, including an overseas assignment in Hong Kong as a member of the team that developed the firm’s Greater China market strategy. Jennifer received her B.S. in Business Management and Marketing from Cornell University.


Manoj (Tito) K. Pombra

Chief Compliance Officer

Manoj (Tito) Pombra is Chief Compliance Officer at Matthews International Capital Management, LLC. Prior to joining Matthews in 2005, he was Senior Manager/Manager of Mutual Fund Compliance at Franklin Templeton Investments. Tito also served as Financial Reporting Manager at infoUSA.com and in various fund accounting, legal and compliance positions for over 10 years at Franklin Templeton Investments. Tito began his investment career at Dreyfus Funds as a Fund Accountant. He received a B.S. in Accounting and Economics from Queens College in New York and is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Society of Compliance Professionals (NSCP).


Timothy B. Parker

General Counsel

Timothy Parker joined Matthews International Capital Management, LLC in 2005 as General Counsel. Prior to joining Matthews, he was a Partner with Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Graham LLP, where he represented investment advisers, mutual funds, independent directors and hedge funds in regulatory, enforcement and transactional matters. Tim also served as Global Head of Compliance and Risk Management for Allianz Dresdner Asset Management, where he was responsible for developing and coordinating compliance and risk management systems for Allianz asset management subsidiaries globally, and was a Managing Director of RCM Global Investors, where he served in several legal and compliance roles. Tim received a J.D. from Hastings College of Law and an A.B. in History from the University of California, Berkeley.


James E. Walter, CFA

Executive Vice President, Investment Operations

James Walter is Executive Vice President of Investment Operations at Matthews International Capital Management, LLC. James joined Matthews in 1996, and has built his investment career at the firm. James received a B.S. in Business Administration from John Carroll University.


John P. McGowan

Senior Vice President, Business Administration

John McGowan joined Matthews International Capital Management, LLC in 2004. Prior to joining Matthews, John served as Chief Operating Officer at Forward Funds and ReFlow LLC, a mutual fund liquidity solution provider. Previously, he was a Director of Client Services at PFPC Global Fund Services. John has more than 20 years of financial services experience including positions at M&T Bank, First Pacific Advisors Inc. and Boston Financial Data Services, Inc. He is a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Governors of the Mutual Fund Education Alliance. John received a B.A. in Marketing from Clarkson University.


Cheryl Fung

Senior Vice President, Human Resources

Cheryl Fung joined Matthews International Capital Management, LLC in 2008, and is currently Senior Vice President of Human Resources (HR), responsible for leading the firm’s HR efforts. Cheryl has more than 18 years of experience in the field of human resources, and most recently was the HR Director for CollabNet Inc., a Bay Area technology company. Prior to this, Cheryl spent five years as Vice President of Human Resources with Morgan Stanley’s Online and Individual Investor Group in San Francisco. She also spent four years as the Business and Administration Manager with the Investment Banking division of Goldman Sachs in Singapore. Cheryl speaks both Mandarin and Cantonese fluently.


Mark W. Headley

Chairman and Portfolio Manager

Mark Headley is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Matthews International Capital Management, LLC and a Portfolio Manager. He co-manages the firm’s Pacific Tiger strategy. Mark joined Matthews in 1995 and has been actively involved in Asian markets since 1989. He was an original member of the team that launched the first SEC-registered open-ended Asia (ex-Japan) fund. Mark received a B.A. in Economics and Politics from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
