Matthews Asia Announces Launch of Asia Strategic Income Fund

Investing across capital structure and currencies, the Fund’s bottom-up approach emphasizes creditworthiness, price stability and currency appreciation

San Francisco, 1 September 2014
—Matthews Asia has announced the expansion of its Luxembourg-domiciled UCITS fund range today with the launch of the Matthews Asia Strategic Income Fund (Class I Acc. ISIN: LU1061983224; Class A Acc. ISIN: LU1061982689).

Managed by Teresa Kong, CFA, and co-managed by Gerald Hwang, CFA, and Satya Patel, the Matthews Asia Strategic Income Fund will seek total return over the long term, with an emphasis on income. The Fund invests primarily in bonds and other debt securities of Asian corporate and sovereign issuers in both local and external currencies, and seeks attractive risk-adjusted return by investing across capital structures and across currencies.

Matthews believes that the growth of Asia’s bond markets has been one of the region’s most important economic developments during the past decade. Given significant structural reforms that have led to the expansion of capital markets, the opportunity now exists for investors to further diversify their fixed income portfolios and potentially enhance their risk-adjusted returns through dedicated allocations to Asia fixed income.

Teresa Kong, Lead Portfolio Manager comments, “Investors’ fixed income portfolios tend to be underinvested in Asia since widely used global debt benchmarks generally allocate to the most indebted countries as opposed to the most creditworthy. Dedicated Asian fixed income allocations enable investors to potentially create a more diversified exposure across interest rate, credit and currency while enhancing the overall risk-return profile of a fixed income portfolio. We aim to achieve this at Matthews Asia, by taking an active, bottom-up approach in order to identify the most attractive securities to construct a portfolio based on our assessment of creditworthiness, interest rate cycle and potential for currency appreciation.”

Jonathan Schuman, Head of Global Distributions, added “Following the launch of the Asia Strategic Income strategy in the United States nearly three years ago, we are pleased to offer this strategy to investors through a UCITS vehicle. The Matthews Asia Strategic Income Fund complements Matthews Asia’s other offerings, and provides investors with both attractive yield and fixed income portfolio diversification."
