Matthews Launches India Fund in Switzerland

Matthews International Capital Management, LLC announced the addition of the Matthews India Fund to its Luxembourg-domiciled Matthews Asia Funds, a UCITS umbrella fund.

San Francisco, CA, 19 July 2011—Matthews International Capital Management, LLC (“Matthews”) announced the addition of the Matthews India Fund to its Luxembourg-domiciled Matthews Asia Funds, a UCITS umbrella fund.

Matthews has offered its dedicated India strategy to U.S. investors since 2005, and this UCITS fund will employ the same investment approach and team. The Fund is led by Portfolio Manager Sharat Shroff, CFA, and co-managed by Sunil Asnani.

“The ongoing liberalization of India’s capital markets provides an opportunity to invest in an economy that is growing when many parts of the world are slowing,” said Sharat Shroff. “Rising household income, greater availability of capital, and the emergence of private sector enterprises are driving India's economic expansion.”

In Matthews’ view, a long-term horizon is essential when investing in India. The Matthews India Fund employs a bottom-up, all-cap approach with a focus on small- and mid-sized companies, and seeks to invest in firms with strong management teams and sustainable business models. The Fund is benchmark agnostic and aims to be fully invested at all times, with risk mitigation embedded in its securities selection.

“As a firm we have been investing in India since 2003, and have focused on investing in Asia since 1991,” said Jonathan Schuman, Matthews’ Head of Global Business Development. “Given the increasing importance of India to regional and global economic growth and the generally limited exposure to Indian companies in most investor portfolios, we believe that it is important to offer this long-standing strategy to global investors.”
